In order to create a mix, a DJ essentially needs two turntables and a DJ mixer. With a mixer, a DJ is able to match the beats of a master mix playing through speakers with a cued non-playing source, by redirecting the latter to headphones.
A DJ mixer constitutes the connection between the various audio sources. A console will usually have between two and six audio channels, to which sources such as turntables and CD players like the Pioneer CDJ, can be connected and mixed.
